Editing or deleting a record

  1. To edit or delete site, habitat or feature records you first need to log on to the Habitat Matters website and find the site record you wish to change. This can either be on;

    • The home page or on the “create a site” page. Scroll through the list, or use the filters, to find the record you want, and then click on the Edit button

    • To access habitat and features records click view next site record. Find all records in the “Habitat and Features” table. Click edit next to the desired record 

  2. To edit simply change the record and scroll to the base of the page and click submit

  3. To delete the site record scroll to the bottom of the page and click delete

  4. Alternatively you can use a direct link to an individual record page, adding the record ID number on the end:

    • https://www.habitat-matters.com/sites/view?location_id= [add record ID number]

    • For instance, if you wanted to find the record with record ID "3309159", the link to the record page would be:

      • https://www.habitat-matters.com/sites/view?location_id= 3309159

  5. Once you viewing the record page, you can click on the button to “Edit” at the top of the entry page.

  6. Once you have arrived at the editing page, you can change any details that need updating and re-submit the record, or you can delete it.

Downloading a QR code for the site

  1. To download the QR for the site click on the ‘home’ page or the mapping page. Click ‘view’ next to the site name.

    • Click ‘Connect your site to the digital asset.’ Then click ‘Download site QR code here’. 

  2. To download a QR code for a Habitat or Feature you can either;

    • Click ‘Download QR’ in the ‘habitat and features’ table next or

    • Click ‘view’ next to the habitat and feature created and Click ‘Connect your site to the digital asset.’ Then click ‘Download site QR code here’. 

  3. The download will appear at the bottom of the screen or can be found in ‘downloads’ by clicking the three dots at the top of your browser. It can also be found in your downlad files on your desktop.

Adding a feature

  1. Select ‘view’ next to the project of interest on the ‘home’ page or the Mapping tab at the top of the screen

  2. Under ‘Habitat and features’ you will see a ‘Add a feature’ button. Click on it to add a feature.

  3. Add a name for your Feature. if you have a specific site code or reference number add this to the box below

  4. Select the Feature type from predefined lists. These have been generated by leading experts in the field. Please select other if the site specific . 

  5. For Features you can add a point, line or polygon. Click on the ‘draw a point’, draw a line or ‘draw a polygon’ button to the top right of the map. You can identify these by hovering over them;

    • Adding a point i.e. a bird box. Click ‘draw a point’ and click on the map in the desired location

    • Adding a line i.e. a Tunnel. Click ‘draw a line’ and click on the map to start and double click to end the entry. 

    • Adding a polygon click on the map to create the perimeter and double click to close the polygon 

    • If you wish to make adjustments use the ‘Modify the selected feature’ and select the polygon

    • The spatial ref: and area are automatically populated

    • Note: You can only add one feature. Adding another with result in an error message and a request to delete the previous entry 

  6. Add a ‘creation date’ typically the opening of the project or completion of the works

  7. Add ‘Description of site and biodiversity objectives:’ i.e. what is the feature aiming to mitigate and the ideology behind the use of the feature. 

  8. Add the targeted species lists i.e. Hedgehogs, butterflies etc. 

  9. Upload images of the site, habitats and biodiversity spotted

  10. Click ‘Submit’ once you have filled out all the relevant information. Once the site record has been submitted it will appear on the ‘project page’ page where you can ‘edit’, ‘view’ or download the QR code for the entry.

Adding a habitat

  3. Add a name for your Habitat. if you have a specific site code or reference number add this to the box below

  4. Select habitat type from one of the predefined lists below. These categories have been populated from;

    1. Natural England Biodiversity Matrix 3.0

    2. Natural England small sites matrix

    3. UKHab Habitat Classification  

  5. Add your habitat polygon by clicking the ‘draw a polygon’ button to the top right of the map. You can identify this by hovering over it;

    • Click on the map to draw the habitat polygon and create a perimeter. Double click to close the polygon 

      • If you wish to make adjustments use the ‘Modify the selected feature’ and select the polygon

    • The spatial ref: and area are automatically populated

    • Note: You can only add one site polygon. Adding another with result in an error message and a request to delete the previous entry 

  6. Add a ‘creation date’ typically the opening of the project or completion of the works

  7. Add biodiversity information i.e. the height of vegetation, target height and percentage of vegetation cover for a specific habitat

  8. Add mitigation measures you have taken and the ideology behind the creation of the habitat. 

  9. Add management and maintenance requirements for the site and pertinent information to understand how the site continues to operate and function. 

  10. Upload images of the site, habitats and biodiversity spotted

  11. Click ‘Submit’ once you have filled out all the relevant information. Once the site record has been submitted it will appear on the ‘project page’ page where you can ‘edit’, ‘view’ or download the QR code for the entry

Adding a site record

  2. Add a name for your project. if you have a specific site code or reference number add this to the box below

  3. Select the site type. If you cannot identify the site from the predefined fields pleases use the ‘other’ box

  4. Add the full site address or site identification to the ‘Site type:’

  5. Search for the site location using the ‘Search for a place on the map:’ this can be the site postcode or a nearby location. This will show the location on the map with a pin and move the map to the place allowing you to define the exact location.

    • For postcodes use a space in the middle i.e. XX2 3XX

  6. To zoom into the map use the select the arrows tool to the top right of the map. You can either:

    • Use the scroll bar to the left of the map

    • Hold the shift key and draw a window around the area of interest 

    • Hold the Ctrl button and scroll wheel whilst over the map you can zoom in and out

    • Touch screen or mobile device user can zoom in and out using your fingers or the zoom scroll to the right of the screen

  7. Add your site polygon by clicking the ‘draw a polygon’ button to the top right of the map. You can identify this by hovering over it

    • Click on the map to draw the site boundary polygon and create a perimeter. Double click to close the polygon 

      • If you wish to make adjustments use the ‘Modify the selected feature’ and select the polygon

    • The spatial ref: and area are automatically populated

    • Note: You can only add one site polygon. Adding another with result in an error message and a request to delete the previous entry 

  8. Add a ‘creation date’ typically the opening of the project or completion of the works

  9. Add the description of the site this can be the societal purpose i.e. a new school to support the building a housing development.

  10. Add a project description i.e. define the catchment and likely use of the asset

  11. Add biodiversity information i.e. the mitigation measures you have taken and the ideology behind the project

  12. Add the targeted species lists i.e. Hedgehogs, butterflies etc. 

  13. Add the species identified on the site in the ecological survey. 

    • Surveys can also be added through the observation collection of data for the site and be specific to locations across the site

  14. Upload images of the site, habitats and biodiversity spotted

  15. Click ‘Submit’ once you have filled out all the relevant information. Once the site record has been submitted it will appear on your ‘home’ page where you can ‘edit’ or ‘view’ the entry

Click on create new account on the home page

  1. Enter a name, user name, your e-mail address and company name*

    • company name is optional

  2. Read and accept the Terms and Conditions.

  3. You will be sent a verification e-mail.  Follow the link to set up your account.

  4. You can change your account details and edit your recording preferences at any time by clicking ‘My Account’ in the top right corner and selecting the ‘Edit’ tab.
